the originals

I listened carefully and read all of your excellent and creative ideas about naming this organization and making plans for the future. Our official name is Raw Thunder and our logo will incorporate a lightening bolt. RAW translates into any meaning you feel. It means “Rowdy Ass Women” to me, but it might mean “Real Authentic Women” to you. I eliminated any reference to Arizona because I want a bigger circle. I want us to motorcycle with women of the world. You might see a woman wearing our shirt when you travel to Canada, Europe, Australia or Africa.

I want to personally thank our Chase Driver, Judy, for her excellent job of protecting our riders. We were able to load a Springer with a rear flat tire into the trailer by our selves and were fortunate enough to be close to a motorcycle shop in Sedona. The flat tire was repaired in Sedona and Cat was able to ride her gorgeous Springer back home to Phoenix (I do have black mail photos of the cell phone Cat and they can be bought for a price). Our Chase Driver always held cars back for me when I tailed our lines to be sure we all cleared intersections together. She also kept passing cars to a minimum for us. (How did she manage to find that “Dude” though with the 2 flat tires?)

Thank you Sonya for keeping the pace flowing like a ballet without any interruptions for the other riders when I had to fall out and ride the shoulder. Thank you Pat for riding the “drag” for me to keep me abreast of any problems (I missed our usual side by side ballet riding). Thank you Karen for riding in the middle in case we got split up so no one would get lost.
I would also like to point out the grace clearly reflected in each and every one of you as you patiently encouraged beginner riders without trampling their spirits…They will be back stronger…Confident living is a way of life…

“The Original Ride” June 1998
Edited Version for Website by Char Zack

Seventeen “originals” began our first ride. We left Old Town Cottonwood, Arizona at about 10:00 am and rode out toward Strawberry to the Mormon Lake Lodge on the back Highway 87 in Flagstaff, Arizona for lunch. We came home through Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona. The Phoenix riders did not get home until about 7:00 that evening.

I do not want to lead an exclusive, small circle of women. I want to draw our circle bigger to include all women riders. I want Native American women, Hispanic women, Afro American women, Asian women and any other color of woman in my circle. I want heterosexual, homosexual, bi-sexual and celibate women in my circle. I want to lead a circle filled with diversities and differences of all aspects of life. I want to be part of reconnecting the collective consciousness of women when we used to be a “herding” consciousness…
