2003 Newsletter

I would love to post stories from you about our rides. Visit this website as often as you can to move us up in the search engine rankings. Hopefully we'll find a vendor in 2004 to make our logo patches.

I had the pleasure of riding to Laughlin with deb Martin a the April 2003 rally. Aside from so much shopping, Deb was also keeping her eye out for new vendors for her custom shop as well as the environment for selling her bikes and leathers there. Deb sponsors our website and pays monthly fees for us. Her link is Elite Custom Motorcycles, which is located in Prescott, AZ. You will stand there in rapture when you see the custom bikes on her showroom floor. She also has a full floor of leathers, boots and accessories. Deb was gracious enough to hold a first class free bbq at her shop for the WOW women when they came to Prescott for their national convention in 2003. Be sure to tell her you are a Raw Thunder member when you visit her.

Check out the "rides" link for the 2004 calendar. After much discussion, I have decided to focus on two main day events and one overnighter. These three rides have been attended the most in the past seven years. This year we will be riding for the Verde Valley Battered Women's Shelter. I can easily accommodate 20 women at my place who need to stay overnight. I have plenty of room for your bikes and lots of floor space for your sleeping bags. If you want to camp, there is a beautiful State Park Lagoon just one mile from my home. This is our chance to make a difference! Please, invite and encourage your sisters to ride this event with us on May 15, 2004. I am sure the local press will cover this event. Our second year will be even better!

I attended the WOW convention in Prescott and met the infamous "C" and her partner Laura. We had been waiting for years to finally meet and ride...C and Laura rode their bikes all the way from Washington. I met other fabulous, true grit women bikers as well and was impressed with WOW's organizational skills and excellent leadership conference. My dream is to somehow connect all of these women to ride for battered women all across the USA every year. We can and do make a difference!

Raw Thunder always needs postage stamps and I need help from Tucson and Phoenix with calling trees. It has been my experience that if I call members about 1 to 2 weeks before a ride more women attend. I really need help with this, especially for the charity ride.

Please send me your mailing, e-mail and phone number changes so my files are current.

This is the year my friends! Expect the best. I miss all of you and cannot wait to ride in the wind with you in February.

Love, Char

Dear Sistahs....

I tell ya, 2003 was another eventful year for us! The "Horny Toad" ride out to Bartlett Lake was very well attended. This ride will continue to grow. We laughed our asses off at the lunch table and were blessed with a gorgeous, sunny day. The embrace of sisterhood on this ride never ceases to amaze me. We are always a remarkable sight as we pass by the Hideaway. Women of all walks approach us and we are, indeed, an inspiration. Our spirit is contagious.

Our first annual charity ride was a huge success. Seventeen women raised over $800 cash as well as goods such as a phone system and office equipment for the Brewster Shelter for battered women in Tucson, Arizona. The Northern Arizona sistahs gathered in the wee hours of the morn and met Tucson right on time. Therese Griffey greeted us with her new Road King. She's such a big girl now! Lynne Metcalf and Jodi Rust sold their sportsters and stepped up to a 1340 evo engine too.

The Tucson Ladies of HOG also invited the local WOW Chapter who escorted us up to Mt. Lemmon. We stopped for lunch before we climbed up the mountain to give the Northern AZ girls a "butt" break and some heat relief. This gave us an opportunity to meet our new friends. An anonymous person picked up the entire lunch tab and triggered the magic in our spirits. We stopped for dessert on the mountain (everyone passed their plate around so we could taste every single pie flavor on the menu) and all of us felt hesitant about having to say goodbye. The bonds that formed that afternoon were truly special. It saddens me to report that Mt. Lemmon was burned to the ground about one month after this ride in one of the largest fires in the history of Arizona. Check out the website for photos of this trip and others.

The Northern AZ girls headed home with huge smiles and weary exhausted bodies knowing we still had another 4 hours of riding in the heat. After leaving Courtney in Phoenix, Sonya, Lynne, June and I decided we should stop on Bell Rd. for some dinner and coffee and take a break before our last stretch of serious night riding. We laughed our asses off in a most memorable conversation, geared up, and took the access ramp to I-17. Sonya disappeared from the rear and never seemed to make it to the Interstate. We pulled over and waited 10 minutes or so. Lynne and June waited as I circled back to find Sonya still on the access ramp with a rear flat tire! Now, bear in mind, we have been riding for over 12 hours in a June desert on a very hot day. It became apparent we were not going to be able to locate a tow truck that could take Sonya's scoot to a secure sight until we could come back to Phoenix. We ended up pushing her bike to a motel nearby who kept their eye out until her husband was able to come to Phoenix and pick it up. I rode Sonya back on my Corbin, solo gunslinger seat that is just a pea pad! It was a beautiful night ride though. We did not get home until about 1 am. A true grit story.
